Sometimes Possibilities are Endless

I recently ordered a DVD from Amazon.  Somewhere hidden in my boxes of VHS tapes I have the television version of it called: The Search for Ancient Astronauts.

I read the book many years ago when my kids were fairly young.   It impressed me quite a bit.

Ok, I lie.. it impressed me a LOT!

Chariots of the Gods: (the book) by Erich von Daniken

Paperback: 224 pages
Publisher: Berkley Trade (January 1, 1999)
ISBN-10: 0425166805

Product Description
Erich von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods is a work of monumental importance--the first book to introduce the shocking theory that ancient Earth had been visited by aliens. This world-famous bestseller has withstood the test of time, inspiring countless books and films, including the author's own popular sequel, The Eyes of the Sphinx. But here is where it all began--von Daniken's startling theories of our earliest encounters with alien worlds, based upon his lifelong studies of ancient ruins, lost cities, potential spaceports, and a myriad of hard scientific facts that point to extraterrestrial intervention in human history. Most incredible of all, however, is von Daniken's theory that we ourselves are the descendants of these galactic pioneers--and the archeological discoveries that prove it... * An alien astronaut preserved in a pyramid
* Thousand-year-old spaceflight navigation charts
* Computer astronomy from Incan and Egyptian ruins
* A map of the land beneath the ice cap of Antarctica
* A giant spaceport discovered in the Andes
Includes remarkable photos that document mankind's first contact with aliens at the dawn of civilization.

I'm a pretty open-minded person. (on occasion I can be stubborn though)  And a theory is just that "a theory".  What makes me open-minded about von Daniken's theory is that, first of all, I do believe we are not alone in this universe, and that we have been visited before and maybe "still" are.

But again.. it's just a theory. Something to make me think.  Something to make me wonder over and over during my long life "could it really be?"

Chariots of the Gods: the movie

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chariots of the Gods?: Unsolved Mysteries of the Past is a book written in 1968 by Erich von Daniken. It is centered on the hypothesis that many ancient civilizations' technologies and religion were given to them by space travelers  who were welcomed as gods.

The movie version of the book is, as I remember, excellent.  But having an old lady memory (or lack of) I want to refresh it so have sent for the DVD.

I have no problem though remembering key places and things that are shown as "possibilities" that there has been aliens visiting here for some time, and that we are their descendents.  To be honest he theorizes that we are their mentally unstable relatives.  He points out that with our large brains only a part of it is functional and works, whereas aliens, as superior beings that can travel thru space use their entire brain.  And we are also the only "animals" that kill each other for reasons other than just food for survival.  He does have some theories that ring true.

But I am not one to jump off a cliff until I know I can land safely...

So do I believe this theory?

No.

Well.. not yet anyway.  Like anything anyone believes in there must be enough proof to make you believe.  But I really do think it's an interesting theory.  One that could be explored for a long time to come.

The book came out many years ago and was very controversial.

Although I am a fairly avid reader, I have to admit that the visual (movie) gives the theory more credence.  It makes it harder to deny the possibility when you are seeing with your own eyes what the author is saying.

For those who have interest in this sort of thing I do recommend you either read the book or get the movie (DVD is only 9.99) and then let you mind wonder, "could any of this hold some truths?"

My dad always talked about this book. He's kind of the credulous type. But it struck a cord in him. I guess it must have affected a lot of people since we're still talking about it.

Tink: I hope its something that interests him!

sqt: all I can say is... i've never forgotten it after all these years. It's food for thought...unless your mind is made up that things can only be one way.

Well this just sounds cool! I'll have to get it. I've always had similar beliefs as you...there's no way we can be the only beings in this universe. It would be such a waste of space. I've always found stuff like this fascinating too...definitely on the wishlist!

When I'm staying with my boyfriend we always see this DVD in a videostore near his house and ponder picking it up. I believe in aliens too...I think the universe is just too big for us to be alone in it! I'm not sure whether or not we've been visited, but stories that say that we have are always very exciting for me...which is why I was such an X-Files junkie in my teens, and then became a Stargate SG1 junkie :P The premise behind Stargate is pretty much the same as this theory...the gods frpm Nordic, Egyptian, etc mythologies are aliens, and they're still out there!

Chris: well the chaos that this book/ movie made was because many thought it goes against religion. But if anyone believes that God made everything, including the universe and all in it.. then it can't possibly go against religion. What it did do though was propose a possibility and that alone is a no-no. But I think there are many possibilities for everything!

Nymeth: this proposes that aliens put us here and tried to teach us how to live on our own. It's very interesting.. so much so it's hard to forget lol

One of my friends really wants me to read this. I have read books in the same vein, but he is not an author you can just go to the bookstore and pick up, sadly! I was just talking about it lately, so it was interesting that you brought it up!

I'll have to pick this up somewhere as it's my kind of thing. I knew of it of course but didn't know what his theories were. I've always believed that UFOs exist and that the planet has probably been visited by various ones over thousands of years. Why not? We travel all over the world to learn about other animal species and if we could travel through space we'd do that too. Why should beings from other planets not be curious about us? They probably show documentaries on their TV about 'those crazy humans'. LOL!

kailana: von daniken never once says that his theory is right. Rather he asks questions, "could this be?" "are you sure this isn't?" etc which makes you want to say "sure it's POSSIBLE" but as with the fact you never know "for sure" it leaves you...wondering.

Cath: I do believe the movie is better than the book. The book has pictures in it but something about seeing them all on the television that makes it totally unforgettable. I had always wished there was even MORE to his findings and theory.

I disagree with his theory that " we are also the only "animals" that kill each other for reasons other than just food for survival."

I've seen a sharp-shinned hawk kill just because it can. And I know that in the jungle, the male cats will kill babies of their own kind if they catch their scent. Domestic tom cats do the same thing.

That theory is just too simplistic.

pamela: well maybe I miss quoted and it's that "we are the only animals that kill for reasons other than food for survival, and have the intelligence to know what we are doing".
Supposedly we should be smart enough not to kill for no reason... supposedly.
