My copy of the movie: the Hobbit arrived last week and I just got around to watching it.

Everyone I know has read the Hobbit (me too) and most have seen the movie.. this is my 4th viewing. I saw it 3 times in the theater.

Unfortunately I didn’t think until well into the movie to take some photo’s from my television….

I so love Ian as Gandalf!

It’s pretty useless to review 1/3 of a movie.. with the usual exceptions of saying how utterly fantastic the settings are, or how outstanding the special effects are.  The story itself is Tolkien at his best. (this includes Lord of the Rings)

The movie introduces you to Bilbo Baggins.. and the beginning of the power of The Ring.  I will let Amazon give a review and just add :  don’t miss it if you haven’t seen it! (and if you have… watch it again!)

Product Description per Amazon

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Tolkien movies that Peter Jackson has made are the finest you will ever see.  They are Fantasy at their Finest! And if they don’t make you want to go to New Zealand I don’t know what will!

Oddly enough I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and totally enjoyed the character of Radagast the Brown played by Sylvester McCoy. He was minor in the movie but I love that Peter Jackson brought him and his animals to life.

Of course, I am in love with Gandalf . He was perfectly cast!  And Richard Armitage as Thorin is simply gorgeous!  Hello?! He’d make anyone want to be Queen of the Dwarf’s!  And what can I say about Martin Freeman as Bilbo?  Just that, once again , the casting for  this movie was outstanding!   For heaven’s sake, don’t miss this movie if you haven’t seen it !

The ending of part one of the movie is superb and gives you a slight glimpse of what Part II will be like…

Smaug!

Give yourself a treat and rent/buy this movie and watch it over and over again!

It's out here on Monday the 8th. I don't know why they couldn't get it out for Easter but never mind. I honestly can't wait.

Love that shot of Smaug at the end! We can hardly wait here for Part 2.....Of course before then is Star Trek, so there is something to get excited about while we wait for December. I'm very thankful for both.

I really liked The Hobbit the second time around. I lent our copy out to my friend, for 24 hours only - It was all I could let it out of my hands for. I missed it as soon as I lent it! IT's not often I feel like this about a movie, either.

I agree that Martin Freeman is good as Bilbo, and the casting is excellent for everyone. In fact, I had time to enjoy the different dwarves more this time, not so caught up in the action as the first time. I like how each is different, and still the same as in the book. And Richard Armitage as Thorin - yes! I agree there too :-)

Isn't that song they sing at the beginning, the dwarf song, really good? I hope it is released on it's own.

Rich and Gray went to see this at the theater last month, but the rest of us hadn't yet seen it. So when we found out that it's now playing at the dollar theater, we decided to splurge. Yep, we just went to see it today! And of my gosh, I loved it soooo much more than I was expecting!!! I mean I was pretty sure I'd enjoy it, but it totally exceeded my expectations. :D

cath: there's something I've never figured out.. that is, how can what people call "a long movie" seem so short? :o)

Susan: oh yes! being able to watch the other characters is one of the reasons I like to see a movie over again! you miss more than you realize!

OMG Debi! I am so glad you got to see it on the "Big screen"!! Peter Jackson never disappoints! and in this case neither does Andy Serkis who did parts of the directing besides being Gollum!

Forgive me, dear Pat...It is not a film that has any interest for me whatsoever. Too grounded in reality I guess...But, I LOVE how much you love it!!!

I saw the movie in January and like you I thought it was superb! Gandalf, Bilbo and Thorin all fantastic - perfect casting!

Since seeing the movie I've read the book - for the first time! I first read The Lord of the Rings many years ago, just after leaving school, actually and have loved it ever since.

By the way, I've just posted my review of The Hobbit (the book that is) - great minds think alike - (see here.)

Ha what a good idea taking pictures of the TV.
BTW - I think you have to have a long pointy beard to be queen of the dwarves.

I definitely need to see this one. I adored the Lord of the Rings trilogy so I have no doubt I will love this movie as well. I've read the book but its been so many years ago now I don't remember too much so it won't spoil the movie for me!
